NPAFC Statistics: Pacific Salmonid Catch and Hatchery Release Data

Background

The NPAFC Convention prohibits directed fishing for Pacific salmon and steelhead trout in Convention waters, except for scientifically reviewed and approved research fishing. The five member countries (Canada, Japan, the Republic of Korea, the Russian Federation, and the United States of America) conduct directed fisheries and stock enhancement activities within their own waters, and they report salmon and steelhead catch and enhancement statistics to NPAFC.

Since 1993, NPAFC has generated hard-copy and on-line versions of its Statistical Yearbooks containing salmonid catch and hatchery release statistics. In recent years, a time series of statistical data was developed to examine salmon production trends. These data included statistics for decades prior to 1993 and updated some of the more recent data. In 2013, work was begun to create electronic data files that combined NPAFC statistics with the time series data and to make these statistics available to the public. The time series data are available for download from this webpage and have replaced the hard-copy and on-line versions of the NPAFC Statistical Yearbooks.

Description of NPAFC Statistics Files

There are two data files that contain statistics: (1) catch statistics and (2) hatchery release statistics. One document contains the metadata for both statistics files.

NPAFC Catch Statistics

    • Commercial Catch: reported by Canada, Japan, Korea, Russia, and USA in number of fish (thousands) and weight (metric tonnes)
    • Sport Catch: reported by Canada, Russia, and USA reported in number of fish (thousands)
    • Subsistence Catch: reported by Canada, Russia, and USA reported in number of fish (thousands)

NPAFC Hatchery Release Statistics

    • Hatchery release statistics: reported by Canada, Japan, Korea, Russia, and USA in number of fish (thousands).

NPAFC Statistics Metadata Report

This report provides information on data file organization, data sources, and limitations for users. The information is important for appropriate use of compiled salmon and steelhead catch and hatchery release statistics. Figures in the Statistics Metadata Report are for informational purposes only and are intended to depict reporting areas.
