Record Pink Salmon Catch Fuels Largest North Pacific Salmon Commercial Catch on Record
Vancouver, BC, Canada (May 29, 2024)—The North Pacific Anadromous Fish Commission (NPAFC) announced preliminary North Pacific-wide total salmon catches for 2023, as reported by its member countries Canada, Japan, the Republic of Korea, the Russian Federation, and the United States. Pacific salmon catch in the North Pacific during 2023—1.1 million metric tonnes (727.6 million fish), as indexed by aggregate commercial catches—was third highest on record in terms of weight, but highest on record in terms of number of salmon caught. The 2023 commercial catch is the seventh year since 2007 with catches over one million metric tonnes, with most of them occurring in odd-years (i.e., 2007, 2009, 2011, 2013, 2015, and 2023), with 2018 being the exception.
